'Cabinet in the Herculaneum taste', Leipzig, Germany, (1928). '1798..."We know from Winkelmann's description about the discoveries at Herculaneum that those charming little rooms excavated in Pompeii and Herculaneum were decorated light red with vermilion (parietes miniati). Under those bright skies man favours dresses and room decorations of light and glowing colours more than we who have been inveigled by the English to adopt the dark colours suited to her climate blackened by coal smoke. The effect of such decoration as we have depicted never fails to be very effective in a small apartment".' Plate CXIII, fig 210, from "An Encyclopaedia of Colour Decoration from the Earliest Times to the Middle of the XIXth Century" with explanatory text by Helmuth Bossert.
