Légende

Enclosed Valley, c. 1623-30. An extremely experimental printmaker along the lines of Rembrandt, Seghers demonstrated that a great painter could expand the limits of a medium to suit his expressive needs. He created 54 etchings, but instead of producing standardized editions, he made each impression a unique and individualized work of art. He often printed on paper prepared with a coloured ground or on cloth using various coloured inks and then added translucent overlays of colour. Cleveland?s etching is one of ten known impressions of the first state; another is nearby at the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College.
