Légende

Dipylon Amphora, 8th Century BC. The largest find of Geometric Period vases was at the Dipylon Cemetery in Athens. Apparently these vessels have a funerary use, perhaps as ossuaries. Their style is called Geometric because all designs?even animals and people?are deliberately reduced to flat geometric forms and linear motifs depicting only the essentials. Neck, side A: funeral couch; side B: procession of mourning women. Body, top register: seven chariots; lower register: hounds pursue a hare.
