'Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child', 19th century. Biblical scene, from 1 Samuel 3: 8: 'And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child'. God calls the young Samuel, who at first mistakes his voice for that of Eli, High Priest of Shiloh. God tells Samuel that the wickedness of the sons of Eli has resulted in their dynasty being condemned to destruction. He is reluctant to pass this information to Eli.
