'Jerusalem hath grievously sinned therefore she is removed', c1846. Biblical scene, from Lamentations 1: 8: 'Jerusalem hath grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward'. The city of Jerusalem is poetically personified in a lament mourning the desertion of the city by God. Engraving after a mid 19th century painting by Karl Joseph Begas.
