'And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak', c1830s. Biblical scene, from Luke 7: 15: 'And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. A sense of awe swept over all of them, and they glorified God. "A great prophet has appeared among us!" they said. "God has visited His people!"' The Raising of the son of the widow of Nain: Jesus arrived at the village of Nain during the burial ceremony of a young man, the only son of a widow who had also lost her husband. Jesus is filled with pity for her, and raises the young man from the dead. Engraving after Johann Friedrich Overbeck.
