Légende

'The Torpedoing of the Channel Steamer Sussex', First World War, March 1916, (c1920). '...view of the vessel beached at Boulogne, showing how the bows were blown clean off by the explosion'. On 24 March 1916, the passenger ferry SS 'Sussex' was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the Channel between Folkestone and Dieppe. The ship was severely damaged and many passengers were drowned - some sources say at least 50 were killed, with the figure 80-100 also suggested.
