Légende

'John Broughton', 1822. Portrait of Jack Broughton (c1703-1789), an English bare-knuckle boxer or 'pugilist'. Broughton staged boxing exhibition at his amphitheatre in Hanway Road in London, and was the first person to codify a set of boxing rules. These were regarded as definitive for around 100 years until the development of the Marquess of Queensberry rules in the 1860s.
