Quayside, Newcastle Upon Tyne, c1955-c1980. A general view of Quayside, showing the Tyne Bridge, Swing Bridge and High Level Bridge in the background, a row of office buildings on the north side of Quayside, and the public in the foreground, with a refreshment van on the left side. The image shows the High Level Bridge in the far background, a combined railway and road bridge built in 1849 with ashlar and cast iron. The re is a partial view of the stone pillars supporting the segmental iron arches. In front of this bridge, closer to the ground, is the Swing Bridge, a swing road and pedestrian bridge built in 1868-1876, originally fueled by steam pumps which were replaced with electric in 1959. In the midground is the New Tyne Bridge, a road bridge built in 1925-1928, which spans the river with a single steel arch. At the time of its construction it was the largest single-span bridge in England. In the foreground is the Quayside, with rows of office and shop buildings on the northern side, and a large group of the public on the road, with a refreshment van and other stalls on the southern side of the road.
