Scene from the First World War, 1914-1919: 'Despite their rough and uncouth exterior, despite the bloody tragedies that marked their history, the Servian [Serbian] officer is polished in manners, courteous and accomplished, often speaking several languages. He has also the simple piety of the true Slav, and is far removed from the commonly accepted notion that he is one of a nation of cut-throats.'
