'Cawnpore - The Passage of the Ganges with the Refugees from Lucknow, 29th and 30th November 1857', (1901). British forces with women and children rescued from Lucknow, and sick and wounded soldiers, crossing the River Ganges. Field Marshal Colin Campbell is on the left. The siege of Lucknow was one of the major engagements of the uprising against British rule in India which began in 1857. The city was besieged by mutineers for 87 days from the outbreak of the mutiny until a British force arrived on 25th November 1857.
