Herbert Kitchener (1850-1916) regained the Sudan for Egypt by his victory at the Battle of Omdurman (1898). He was commander of British forces during the Boer War (1899-1902) and served as War Minister from 1914 to 1916. His portrait was used on a famous World War I army recruitment poster.
