'The Austrian Retreat from Przemysl', (1919). Scene from the First World War, 1914-1919: 'The surrender of the fortress of Przemysl [now in south-eastern Poland] was one of the greatest victories in the earlier stages of the Russian campaign: no less than 120,000 officers and men laid down their arms. Orders had been given to destroy all the forts and artillery, and the two bridges over the San were blown up. Both operations were hastily executed and incomplete, so that enormous numbers of guns and much material fell into Russian hands.' The Austrians surrendered in March 1915.
