'A Captured German Trench', (1919). Scene from the First World War, 1914-1919: 'The grim horrors of war are here shown in all their naked reality. The elaborately planned German defences were battered beyond measure and rendered useless as places of safety by our [British] artillery, many of the Germans surrendered, leaving the inevitable dead, the only occupants of their former habitation.'
