'Vladimirka', 1892, (1965). The Vladimir Highway (or Vladimirka) led east from Moscow to Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod. It was renovated in the mid 18th-century when it became the westernmost section of the Great Siberian Road, linking Siberia to Europe. Prisoners in shackles were marched along it from Moscow to the labour camps. Painting, also known as 'The Vladimirka Road', in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. From "Russian Painting of the 18th and 19th Centuries" by Vladimir Fiala. [Artia, Czechoslovakia, 1965]
