Légende

'A ruin by John Piper harmonizing decorative balance', 1949. View of St Mary le Port, Bristol. Piper was commissioned as a war artist during World War Two, painting civilian life in Britain. He visited bombed buildings, taking photographs and making sketches which formed the basis for a series of paintings. From 1940, he focused particularly on churches that had been damaged or destroyed. St Mary le Port was hit in the attacks on Bristol Docks in November 1940. 'The pleasant colouring and rugged construction of this painting of a ruin by John Piper harmonize into a decorative balance'. From "Decorative Art 1949 - The Studio Year Book", edited by Rathbone Holme and Kathleen M. Frost. [The Studio Publications, London & New York, 1949]
