'The Return of the Prodigal Son', c1665-c1669. Detail. A parable in which a younger son requests his portion of the family property and leaves home for a distant country. Having squandered everything, he finds himself poverty stricken and starving in a country hit by famine. He decides to return home and beg his father's forgiveness. From the Bible (Luke Chapter 15 verse 20). Found in the collection of The Hermitage, St Petersburg.
