Légende

Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia, late 19th or early 20th century. Sergei Alexandrovich (1857-1905) was the fifth son of Tsar Alexander II. He was an influential figure during the reigns of his brother, Alexander III, and nephew, Nicholas II. As Governor of Moscow, he was widely blamed for the disastrous stampede at Khodynka Field in Moscow on 18 May 1896, where 1389 people were trampled to death in a crush amongst spectators at the festivities surrounding the coronation of Nicholas II. He became a focus for opponents of the regime, and on 17 February 1905 he was assassinated by a bomb thrown by Ivan Kalyayaev, a member of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party.
