Vol II South East Coast: Cafre nation; Pl.64. from 'Le Costume Ancien et Moderne', c.1820-40 (colour lithograph). name derived from the Moslem word idolators; cafre/cafri/kaffir evolved during the pre-colonial period as an eqivalent of "negro" and is now considered an ethnic slur, more specifically term was later used as an exonym for the Bantu peoples of Southern Africa, to which it refers in this illustration; group by the huts of the Besciunana sub-tribe, with their utensils and domestic accoutrements, incl. metal; from the collection by Giulio Ferrario (1767-1847) of Costumi dei...
