Sam Houston Monument at the entrance to Hermann Park, Houston, Texas, USA, 1936. Vintage postcard. Sam Houston (1793-1863) led the Texan army in its struggle for independence from Mexico in 1836 (Texas Revolution). After the defeat of the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto he was elected the first president of the Republic of Texas and after Texas joined the United States he went on to serve as a senator and as governor. The city of Houston, which was founded as a small settlement in 1836, is named after him. The monument shows Houston on horseback, pointing towards San Jacinto.
