Émilie du Châtelet, 18th century French mathematician, physicist, and author. A prominent figure of the Enlightenment, Émilie du Châtelet (1706-1749) produced a translation of Isaac Newton's Principia Mathematica that is still the standard version in French. Voltaire, who was one of her lovers, declared that du Châtelet was a great man whose only fault was being a woman.
