Two white men stoning an African American to death, 1919, USA. Between 1910 and 1930, 4.1 million African Americans moved from the Southern states to the cities of the North, West and Midwest in search to escape racial prejudice and seek out better job opportunities. The migration led to increased racial tension as the African Americans moved into neighbourhoods traditionally occupied by white European immigrants. In 1919 the tension exploded into violence, with race riots breaking out in more than 20 cities, the worst occurring in Chicago and Washington DC.
