Henry Bolingbroke demanding the throne of Richard II of England, Flint, Wales, 1399 (1864). After being banished and disinherited by the King, Henry Bolingbroke (c1366-1413), Duke of Lancaster, returned to England with an army and usurped the throne while Richard (1367-1400) was in Ireland. On his return to England, the King was captured at Flint, agreeing to abdicate if Henry would spare his life. Richard was deposed and imprisoned, dying (probably murdered) in Pontefract Castle in 1400.
