South staircase, De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex. Completed in 1935, and the result of an architectural competition, Bexhill's De La Warr Pavilion was the first British building to be built in the International style. The architects who won the competition were Eric Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff. The project was the brainchild of the 9th Earl De La Warr, Herbrand Sackville, a socialist and Mayor of Bexhill at the time. The pavilion was built as a public amenity housing a 1500-seater entertainment hall, a restaurant, a reading room and a lounge.
