Portraits of commanders who furthered the imperialist cause in India and other colonial possessions: General Sir John Littler (1783-1856), lieutenant-general in the British Indian army, who fought in the 1st Anglo-Sikh War (1845-1846); Sir Robert Henry Sale (1784-1845), British soldier who served mainly in India and Afghanistan and rose to the rank of Major-General in the army of the British East India Company; Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge (1785-1856), British field marshal and Governor-general of India; Hugh Gough, 1st Viscount Gough (1779-1869), British field marshal who commanded the troops that defeated the Sikhs during both the First and the Second Anglo-Sikh War for which he became known as the 'hammer of the Sikhs'; Lieutenant General Sir Henry (Harry) George Wakelyn Smith (1787-1860), remembered for his role in the Battle of Aliwal.
