'Court of Old Somerset House, from the North', (1881). View of Somerset Place, on the north bank of the River Thames in London, built in 1547 by Edward Seymour, Lord Protector and Duke of Somerset. Seymour was executed at the Tower of London in 1552 and ownership passed to the Crown. In 1553, the young Princess Elizabeth lived in Somerset House until 1558, when she was crowned Queen Elizabeth I. From Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, and Its Places.
