Old Sarum, Salisbury, Wiltshire, 1894. Old Sarum, the site of the earliest settlement of Salisbury in England. An Iron Age hillfort was erected around 400 BC, controlling the intersection of two native trade paths and the Hampshire Avon. The site continued to be occupied during the Roman period, when the paths became roads. The huge earthwork was chosen by the Normans as the site for a castle, palace and cathedral. In 1226 the cathedral was transferred to a new site in the valley, now known as Salisbury, and the castle gradually fell out of use. From Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes.
