Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania, showing Mount Pisgah, USA, c1900. The town of Jim Thorpe was founded as Mauch Chunk, and was the lower terminus of the Summit Hill & Mauch Chunk Railroad, a gravity railway bringing coal to the head of the Lehigh Canal for shipment to the Delaware River, 43 kilometres downstream. It was the first operational US railway of any substantial length to carry paying passengers, and operated between 1828 and 1932. From Scenic Marvels of the New World edited by Prof. Geo.R. Cromwell.
