Burial of Edith Cavell, Brussels, Belgium, 1915. British nurse Edith Cavell (1865-1915) was appointed matron of the Berkendael Medical Institute, Brussels, in 1907. During the German occupation of Belgium in World War I, the Berkendael Institute was converted to a military hospital. In August 1915 Cavell was arrested by the Germans and tried and found guilty of assisting the escape of 200 Allied soldiers to neutral Holland. She was executed by a firing squad on October 12, 1915. She was buried in Brussels until after the war when her body was brought back to Britain for a memorial service at Westminster Abbey and then transferred to Norwich for re-burial. Photograph from a series of glass plate stereoview images depicting scenes from World War I (1914-1918).
