Tavannes Tunnel, Verdun, northern France, c1914-c1918. The tunnel was used as a hospital, a shelter, and for storage of munitions. In September 1916, an enormous explosion killed many French soldiers who were trapped inside, possibly over 500 men. Photograph from a series of glass plate stereoview images depicting scenes from World War I (1914-1918).
