Légende

'The Funeral Cortège of Napoleon in the Place De La Concorde, December 15, 1840', (1896). In 1840, the British granted permission for the return of the ashes of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) to France from the island of St Helena where he died in exile. This became known as the retour des cendres (return of the ashes). A state funeral was held in Paris - the hearse proceeded from the Arc de Triomphe down the Champs-Élysées, across the Place de la Concorde to the Esplanade des Invalides before burial in the Hôtel des Invalides. Typogravure after the painting by Jacques Guiaud. From Life of Napoleon Bonaparte, Volume IV, by William Milligan Sloane. [The Century Co., New York, 1896]
