'The Battle of Ancrum Moor', 27 february 1545, (c1880). The Battle of Ancrum Moor was fought during the War of the Rough Wooing in 1545. King Henry VIII desired a diplomatic marriage between the infant Mary, Queen of Scots, to his son Edward, rejected by the Scottish Parliament, he declared war against Scotland. The Scottish victory put a temporary end to English depredations in the Scottish border and lowlands. According to Border legend, a Scottish woman warrior Maid Lilliard, was central in the defeat of the English, fighting and killing an English Commander in armed combat.
