'An Italian battleship is hit. The Warspite scores a direct hit on the Cesare at the extreme range of nearly 15 miles', 1940 (1943). An incident at the Battle of Calabria, fought off the coast of southern Italy on 9 July 1940. HMS 'Warspite' was a Queen Elizabeth-class battleship built for the Royal Navy during the early 1910s. She was involved in several major engagements, including battles in the North Sea and Mediterranean, earning her the most battle honours ever awarded to an individual ship in the Royal Navy and the most awarded for actions during the Second World War. 'Warspite' gained the nickname the Grand Old Lady after a comment made by Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham in 1943 while she was his flagship. From East of Malta, West of Suez.
