Ministry of Food Ration Book 1953-1954. After the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 rationing was introduced in the U.K. The first commodity to be controlled was petrol. On 8 January 1940, bacon, butter and sugar were rationed. This was followed by the further rationing of meat, tea, jam, biscuits, breakfast cereals, cheese, eggs, lard, milk and canned and dried fruit. Rationing continued after the war eventually coming to an end on 4 July 1954 when meat and all other food rationing ended in Britain.
