The 5th Pharaoh of the 18th dynasty, she ruled Egypt from 1479 BC and was the first woman to assume the title of Pharaoh, apparently adopting a false beard. Her reign saw a growth in Egypt's trade and prosperity. A print from Kings and Queens of Ancient Egypt, portraits by Winifred Brunton, Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1926.
