'Antioch, on the approach from Suadeah', 1836. The ancient city of Antioch was founded in 301 BC. It was the capital of the Seleucid dynasty in Syria and a province of the Roman Empire. Antioch later became the centre of Christendom outside Palestine. It was in Antioch that the term Christian, referring to converts of Saint Paul, first came into use. It later became part of Turkey and is known as Antakya. The city was the site of a famous siege by the Crusaders in 1097 during the First Crusade.
