Légende

Panhard and Levassor's petrol driven motor car, 1892 (1956). French engineers and inventors Rene Panhard and Emile Levassor became partners in 1886, and in 1891 were the first to mount an internal combustion engine on a chassis. Known as the 'Systeme Panhard', their design, with the engine at the front and rear wheel drive, became the established layout for cars for the next century. A print from Things, a volume about the origin and early history of many things, common and less common, essential and inessential, by Readers Union, the Grosvenor Press, London, 1956.
