'Harley receiving the 'Legion' memorial' 18th century (late 19th century). Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer (1661-1724), was an English statesman of the Stuart and early Georgian periods. The 'Legion?s Memorial' was a document written by author Daniel Defoe and was intended to remind the Commons that 'Englishmen are no more to be slaves to Parliament than to a King'. Print taken from Cassell's Illustrated History of England, volume IV, published by Cassell, Petter, Galpin and Co. (London, Paris and New York, 19th century).
