Council with White Man's Horse, 1856. Isaac Stevens, head of the United States Pacific Railroad Survey, meets with White Man's Horse, chief of the party of Blackfeet Indians, near the Big Muddy River in North Dakota. White Man's Horse has just returned from Flathead country and describes the route ahead to Stevens and his men. Print from Reports of Explorations and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean made under the direction of the Secretary of War in 1853-1855, by Beverley Tucker, volume III, published by Sarony, Major and Knapp (Washington, 1856).
