The Nassau balloon passing over Liege at night, 1836, (1886). Charles Green (1785-1870) built the 'Nassau' balloon which he flew from Vauxhall Gardens in London to Weilburg, Nassau, Germany. It was the world's longest flight at the time, travelling an estimated 480 miles in 18 hours. They flew over Canterbury and Dover, crossed the English Channel, passed over Calais, and Liege in Belgium before landing in Weilburg. Illustration from Cyclopaedia of Useful Arts, Mechanical and Chemical, Manufactures, Mining, and Engineering, by Charles Tomlinson, Volume I, (James S Virtue, London, 1886).
