The queen presenting the Albert Medal to coastguard George Oatley, late 19th century, (1900). Queen Victoria decorates one of her subjects. The Albert Medal for Lifesaving was instituted by Royal Warrant on 7 March 1866 and was named in memory of the Prince Albert. It was originally awarded to recognize saving life at sea.
