Joseph Eggleston Johnston, Confederate general, 1862-1867. One of the senior generals of the Confederacy during the Civil War, Johnston's (1807-1891) effectiveness as a commander was undermined by his excessive caution and a difficult relationship with the Confederate President, Jefferson Davis.
