Captain Frederick Burnaby, officer in the Royal Horse Guards, 1877. A traveller and adventurer, Burnaby became famous when he published A Ride to Khiva, an account of his travels in central Asia undertaken in 1875-1876. He was killed in action at the Battle of Abu Klea in the Sudan in 1885. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
