Captain Jack, chief of the Native American Modoc tribe, 1872. Captain Jack (c1840-1873), whose Native American name was Kintpuash, was the leader of the Modoc tribe. The US Army tried to force the Modoc back to a reservation in Oregon. Their resistance led to the Modoc War of 1872-1873. Captain Jack surrendered on 1 June 1873, was tried for murder and hanged.
