Angel summoning the shepherds to the Nativity, 16th century. The Angel, messenger of God, floating on a cloud from which come shafts of holy light, appears to amazed shepherds who are guarding their flock at night. Two hold their crooks aloft, one has stopped playing his bagpipes, and a fourth holds up a hand in self-defence. From a Book of Hours.
