Légende

'The Arrest of Councillor Broussel', 26th August, 1648 (19th/early 20th century). Pierre Broussel (c1575-1654) was a councillor in the Parlement of Paris. Broussel was an opponent of the tax plans of Cardinal Mazarin, the Chief Minister of France, who had him arrested. Broussel's popularity with the people of Paris meant that the arrest sparked a revolt, Mazarin was forced to free Broussel and France was plunged into the first of the two civil wars known as La Fronde.
