'St Laurence giving alms to the Poor' (detail), mid 15th century. A young mother holding her baby. St Laurence (d258), saint and martyr, was Deacon of the Christian church in Rome. Under the persecution of Valerian he was condemned to death by being broiled. Fresco in the Chapel of Nicholas V, Vatican, Rome, dedicated to St Stephen and St Laurence.
