Golden fleece zitan brushpot with prunus tree and calligraphy, Qing dynasty, China, 1785. A zitan brush pot with carved prunus tree and two calligraphic inscriptions one dated 1785 giving the Qianlong reign name and one allegedly by a famous Qing artist and with two seals. The slightly greyish wood has orange flecks and is of the finest quality - the zitan being of the type called Golden Fleece. Zitan is an extremely dense wood which sinks in water. The brushpot, its base and the three feet all integral with the pot.
