Maki-e lacquer box, late Edo Period, Japan, mid 19th century. The top is decorated in various techniques with a scene inspired by the Utagawa Hiroshige's (1797-1858) famous print 'Shono' from the series '53 stations of the Tokaido Road' with three travellers with umbrellas hastening along under pine with representations of thunder above. The interior is sprinkled ovrall with gold dust and decorated with a picture of a rainbow amid clouds on one section and grasses on the other.
