Polychrome saucer dish with cow and donkey, late Ming dynasty, Chongzhen period, China, 1630-1644. A shallow polychrome saucer dish made for the Japanese market, with steep slashed sides and cafe au lait dressed rim. The whole of the flat interior is decorated with underglaze blue cow, donkey, tree, rock, and moon, a polychrome pavilion, leaves, and v-tick grasses in predominately yellows red and green overglaze enamels. The reverse has a six character Chenghua underglaze blue mark and chatter marks showing on the base and three clumps of v-tick grass on the sides.
